About Aldro

Aldro is a coeducational day and boarding school for around 200 children aged 7 to 13. Located in the picturesque village of Shackleford, just 30 miles from London, it offers full, weekly, and flexible boarding. Aldro welcomes both international students and local families seeking a rural education in the heart of Surrey. Aldro's small class sizes and high aspirations ensure that pupils achieve their very best in the classroom. We want them to discover a love of learning that will stay with them for life. Many will move on from Aldro to the UK’s top independent senior schools, often with scholarships and awards that reflect the diversity and excellence of their achievements along the way.

Frequently asked questions about Aldro

What type of school is Aldro?
Aldro is a broadly academically selective, coeducational day and boarding school for around 200 children aged 7 to 13. Located in the picturesque village of Shackleford, just 30 miles from London, it offers full, weekly, and flexible boarding. Aldro welcomes both international students and local families seeking a rural education in the heart of Surrey.
How do I apply to Aldro?
Being broadly academically selective, the admissions process is guided by Aldro's desire to identify children who are able to benefit from its balanced and well-rounded education and to make a positive contribution towards the life of the school. Aldro's main entry points are Form 3 (age 7+) and Form 7 (age 11+) although pupils will be considered for other years of entry if places are available. You can read more about the admissions process on Aldro's website:
https://www.aldro.org/admissions/admissions-process
What are the fees at Aldro?
Fees at Aldro are approximately £8,918–£15,750 per term, depending on the year group and whether pupils board. Specific information about our fees can be found on our website:
https://www.aldro.org/admissions/fees-and-bursaries
What are the timings of a typical school day?
Children booked to join breakfast club are dropped at 7.30am. For normal morning drop off, pupils are welcomed from their vehicles by members of staff between 8am - 8.20am depending on their year group. Each pupil’s first commitment of the day is Registration with their Form Tutor at 8.25am.

Collection times vary by form group, starting at 4.45pm and the last pick up is at 6pm. A free of charge waiting club is available after school until 6pm, followed by a pre-bookable supper club until 6.30pm (small extra charge).
Is Aldro selective?
Aldro is a broadly academically selective school.

To help Aldro build the fullest picture of a child, they ask parents to provide a copy of their child’s latest, full school report at registration and will seek a reference from their child’s current school, prior to inviting them to join us for a Taster Morning.

Taster Mornings are an opportunity for each child to experience a little of Aldro life for themselves, to meet their potential peers and members of staff, at the same time as taking our assessments. Depending on the point of entry, this is either through a group or individual Taster Morning. The Form 3 Taster Morning is typically in the second half of the Christmas term.

Offers are made on the basis of the information provided from a child’s school report, reference, performance in Aldro's assessments, observations from staff and any interview.
Does Aldro have Saturday morning lessons?
Children no longer have lessons on a Saturday. However, children in Years/Forms 5 -8 will have sports fixtures which are predominantly held on Saturday mornings (in addition to the mid-week fixtures on a Wednesday afternoon). On some Saturday mornings, whole school sporting events will be scheduled instead of inter-school matches.
Does Aldro offer wrap-around care?
As a boarding school, there's always a warm welcome and plenty happening before and after the school day. Children can arrive at school from 7.30am for breakfast club (small extra charge), are welcomed into school from 8am, and can stay in school until 6pm. A pre-bookable, paid-for supper club is available until 6.30pm, if needed.

Beyond the school day, there is an extensive programme of clubs and enrichment activities – described as a 'significant strength' of the school – children are engaged, active and having fun, whether they're discovering a new hobby, developing a talent or simply spending time with friends.

It's all part of creating a school that works for busy families, while giving every child the opportunity to thrive.
When did Aldro become co-ed?
Since welcoming girls in 2021, the school community has gone from strength to strength. With the dedicated support of the Head of Girls and Head of Girls' Sport, girls are an integral part of every aspect of life at Aldro.

Whether on the sports field, on stage, in the classroom or through the many opportunities beyond the curriculum, pupils are encouraged to discover their passions, build confidence and achieve their personal best. Aldro is proud to celebrate the many successes its girls have already enjoyed in sport, drama and beyond.

Co-education has enriched the community, creating an environment where every child can flourish.
What is the Aldro Sports Pathway?
Working in his role as Aldro's Director of Sports Development and High-Performance Coach, Mr Brett Taylor has launched an exciting new initiative: ‘Aldro Sports Pathway’. Mr Taylor identifies pupils who have strong sporting potential and is providing them with additional coaching support. Using his elite and international coaching experience, Mr Taylor is ensuring that pupils develop, learn and move forward with sporting confidence at Aldro, in their external club teams and at their future senior schools

As part of the Aldro Sports Pathway, Mr Taylor is working with external clubs to better understand how we can deliver bespoke coaching, prepare for important, representative trials, and provide further external club opportunities. Where helpful, extra training sessions are slotted into the diary in advance of key fixtures to make sure children are performing at their best. Children on the Aldro Sports Pathway are invited to elite sports masterclasses and skills days; recent examples have been a Charterhouse Sports Masterclass and a skills session with Chelsea Football Club.
Does Aldro offer a scholarship?
Yes, Academic, Music and Sports scholarships are offered for entry into Form 7.
